Toddler sleep is its own universe. A child who slept beautifully as a baby might suddenly resist bedtime fiercely at 18 months, or wake at 5am reliably for months. Here is a guide to the most common problems and what actually helps.
Bedtime battles
Toddlers are developmentally wired to resist separation. Their growing sense of self and their deep attachment to their caregivers combine to make bedtime goodbyes genuinely difficult.
A predictable bedtime routine is the most powerful tool you have. Aim for four to five steps done in the same order every night: bath, pyjamas, brush teeth, story, song, goodnight. The predictability signals to the toddler brain that sleep is coming and reduces resistance.

Night wakings

Early rising
Waking before 6am is one of the most common and most exhausting toddler sleep problems. Common causes include a bedtime that is too late, too much daytime sleep, room that gets light too early, or genuine biological early chronotype.

Dropping the nap
Most children drop the midday nap somewhere between age 2.5 and 4. During the transition, a quiet rest time in a dark room with no screens is worth preserving even when baby does not sleep. Many children who refuse to nap in a cot will still fall asleep in a quiet car or pram.
