Choosing the Right Car Seat: A Complete Safety Guide

Car seats save lives, but only when fitted correctly and in the right stage for your child. Here is everything you need to know.

A car seat is the one piece of baby equipment where there is no budget option. The right car seat fitted correctly is a matter of safety. This guide will help you choose the right one and use it properly.

The law

In the UK, all children must use a car seat until they are either 135cm tall or 12 years old, whichever comes first. All car seats sold in the UK must meet either the older ECE R44/04 standard (weight-based) or the newer R129 standard (height-based). The R129 (i-Size) standard is generally considered safer.

Stage one: from birth

For a newborn, you need an infant carrier. These are rear-facing and can be used from birth to around 12 to 15 months depending on the model. They come with or without a compatible base.

A base that attaches to the car with ISOFIX (the anchor points in most modern cars) is safer and easier to use than a seatbelt installation.

Extended rear-facing

Rear-facing is significantly safer than forward-facing in a front collision, which is the most common and severe type. In Scandinavian countries where extended rear-facing is standard, child road fatality rates are far lower. Current guidance recommends keeping children rear-facing as long as possible, ideally to at least 15kg.

Convertible car seats

A convertible seat starts rear-facing for babies and converts to forward-facing for toddlers, lasting from birth through to around 18kg or beyond. These offer better value over time.

High-back boosters (Group 2/3)

Once a child outgrows their group 1 seat, they move to a high-back booster with a 5-point harness or adult seatbelt (depending on the specific seat) for use from around 15kg through to 36kg.

The most important things to get right

**Do not buy second-hand** unless you know the full history. A car seat involved in an accident may look intact but may be structurally compromised.

**Get your seat fitted and checked.** Many car seat retailers and road safety organisations offer free seat checks. Take advantage of this, especially for your first installation.

**Never use an expired seat.** Most car seats expire 6 to 10 years from manufacture. Check the date on the label.

**Follow the manual exactly.** Every seat has specific installation requirements.
