Second Trimester Must-Haves: Shopping as Your Bump Grows
Often called the honeymoon trimester, the second trimester is a great time to start getting prepared. Here is what to buy now.
For many women, the second trimester is when pregnancy starts to feel good. The nausea lifts, energy returns, and the bump begins to show. It is also the ideal window for shopping and planning because you feel well enough to enjoy it without being too close to the finish line.
Maternity clothing
By week 16 or so, your usual clothes will start to feel tight and uncomfortable, especially around the waistband. Maternity clothing has come a long way and a few versatile pieces will carry you through the rest of your pregnancy and much of postpartum.
Start with a good pair of over-the-bump leggings or shorts, a handful of stretchy tops that work for nursing too, and comfortable loungewear for home.
For your body
Compression socks become more useful as your bump grows and puts more pressure on your legs and feet. Many women notice swelling in the ankles from around week 20 onwards, and compression socks worn during the day can make a real difference.
A belly support band is a game changer for anyone on their feet a lot, exercising, or experiencing round ligament pain. It lifts the weight of the bump and takes the pressure off your lower back and pelvis.
Continue to use a belly moisturiser every day. Palmer's Cocoa Butter is a classic for good reason and is affordable enough to use generously.
Big purchases to start thinking about
The second trimester is the right time to research your larger purchases even if you do not buy them straight away. Prams and car seats often need to be ordered in advance, and having a clear idea of what you want before the third trimester takes the stress away later.
A convertible car seat that grows from rear-facing infant to forward-facing toddler is a great long-term investment.
A gift for yourself
If someone is throwing you a baby shower or asking what you need, a second trimester essentials kit is a lovely and practical choice.
The second trimester is a wonderful window to make decisions calmly and with plenty of time. Enjoy it.
