Setting Up the Nursery: A First-Time Parent's Guide

Everything you need to create a safe, practical, and beautifully calm sleep and care space for your baby.

Setting up a nursery can feel overwhelming, especially when you scroll through Instagram and see immaculate rooms with matching everything. The truth is that a great nursery is a functional one. Here is what you genuinely need and how to think about the space.

The sleep setup

Most sleep experts recommend having baby room-share for the first six months, so your nursery may be used more for daytime naps and changing at first. A crib or cotbed that converts as baby grows is a wise long-term investment.

If your budget is smaller or your space is limited, a mini crib is a great alternative.

For the first few months, keep a bassinet in your bedroom where feeding is easier. The nursery crib becomes the main sleep space once baby transitions out of your room.

Sound and light

White noise is worth having in any room where baby sleeps. It blocks out household sounds that might disturb sleep and recreates the ambient sounds of the womb.

A gentle night light without blue light is essential for night feeds and nappy changes. You want just enough light to see what you are doing without fully waking either of you.

The changing area

A changing station does not need to be a separate piece of furniture. A contoured changing pad on top of a dresser works just as well and means you have storage built in.

Keep a small caddy on the changing station stocked with nappies, wipes, cream, and a spare outfit. Reaching for things with one hand while holding a wriggling baby with the other is an art form and having everything within arm's reach is non-negotiable.

Air quality

A nursery air purifier is not strictly necessary but it is a lovely addition, especially if you live somewhere with pollution or allergies in the household. The Momcozy purifier runs quietly in sleep mode and has a soft night light built in.

What does not need to be expensive

Soft furnishings, artwork, and decorative items can be as budget-friendly or as special as you like. What matters is that the room feels calm, has good blackout blinds, and contains everything you need within easy reach. The rest is lovely but optional.
