Newborn Sleep
What to expect in the first weeks and months
Newborn sleep is very different from adult sleep. Most newborns sleep 14–17 hours per day in short stretches, day and night. Your baby is not yet aware of the difference between daytime and nighttime. Newborns often wake frequently, feed often, sleep unpredictably, and fall asleep during feeds — this is completely normal.
